From where we sat we could almost escape the static noise of waking up at 5 o’clock and returning home by 9.
There we sat, economy and me. Not one but the same, next to the canals floating carelessly
Into another sea of stillness and weight.
And we sang a love song for the dead and for the damned and for all who don’t know better
but to run in circles and play the hand history dealt by birth.
A love song for the beauty we both found in the uselessness of it all. A toast to life and to a yet doubtful afterlife
And to everything that comes in-between.
So we sang. We talked so much that day. Minimum wage almost felt human.
Hesitating only for a moment the cooling breeze came and took our smell of summer, of failure with it over the canal.

Von dem Platz aus, an den wir saßen, konnten wir beinahe dem statischen Lärm des um-fünf-uhr-aufwachen-und-um-neun-heimkommen entkommen.
Dort saßen wir, die Ökonomie und ich, nicht eins aber gleich. Neben dem Wasserkanal, der sorgenlos in ein Meer aus Stille und Gewicht floss. Und wir sangen. Wir sangen ein Liebeslied für die Toten, für die Verdammten und für alle, die es nicht besser wissen, als im Kreis zu laufen und die Karten auszuspielen, die ihnen die Geschichte bei Geburt ausgeteilt hat. Ein Liebeslied für die Schönheit, die wir beide in der Nutzlosigkeit von allem das ist gefunden haben.
Ein Toast auf das Leben und auf ein immer noch unsicheres Nach-dem-Tod und auf alles das dazwischen kommt. Also sangen wir.
Wir sprachen so viel an diesem Tag, dass sich Mindestlohn fast menschlich anfühlte.
Nur für einen Moment zögernd kam die kühle Brise und nahm unsren Duft des Sommers, unsren Duft des Scheiterns mit sich über den Wasserkanal.
